Current Skincare Routine: Evening

Having already spoken about my Morning Routine earlier in the week, I thought it was only fair to talk about my evening routine too as it is the one I spend more time on and the one that I consider a tad more. It used to be that I wouldn't bother with a morning routine as when I was a bit younger I didn't feel like my skin needed it as much. I would still use an eye cream and a moisturiser but I wouldn't bother cleansing, it was all about my evening routine.

My evening skincare routine has always been something I have done for as long as I have worn makeup. When I was younger my mother always told me that if I am wearing makeup, I need to use skincare and I am so thankful for this advice as she is right. For a woman who claims not to know much about beauty, she is oddly wise. She also told me to never play around with my brows too much so I never went through that phase of hideous thin brows and I have gloriously bushy brows to this day.

When I first started using skincare I was using the brands targeted to younger skin such as Simple but at the time brands like The Ordinary and The Inkey List did not exist to provide a good cheap product. The kids don't know how lucky they have it these days. Anyway as I've got older, my skincare has progressed and I have ventured into the more expensive stuff as I have started working. I do still try to use a mix of high/low products as I do not believe expensive is better in the world of skincare. I think it is important to spend money in some areas such as your serums but other than that I think you can play around with products to find what works for you.

A good evening routine is important as overnight is the time that your skin works on renewal and rejuvenation so using products that are going to aid this in your evening routine is incredibly important. Another thing to consider is that these products aren't as interrupted as products are during the day. You are not wearing makeup and your skin does not have to battle different environments. This is the time to bring out the richer products.

Evening Routine

Double Cleanse > Eye Cream > Serums > Moisturiser > Face Mist

When I see my routine laid out like it is above, it does not look that different from my Morning Routine and to be honest it isn't, it follows a very similar pattern. For the most part it is just the textures that change and the amount of products I use; the likelihood is that I am going to use more than one serum, I can add in a facial oil and obviously I double cleanse.

Double Cleanse

Speaking about Double Cleansing, shall we get into it. The first cleanser I use will always be a balm cleanser purely because they have my favourite texture and they seem to be the most effective. Balm cleansers are the most effective, the least damaging as for the most part you do not have to work to remove it and they usually contain a lot of oils rather than drying ingredients which a lot of foam cleansers contain.

At the moment I have been using the Drunk Elephant Slaai Melting Butter Cleanser. I actually bought the Nice to Meet You Set which has a mini of this cleanser in it and it is incredible. The cleanser is super soft and it really does melt your makeup off.  I just take a small amount, rub it on my face and it will remove all makeup and SPF. The cleanser does also come with the Bamboo Booster which I add in once a week as a form of exfoliation.

If I am not using the Drunk Elephant cleanser, my absolute favourite is the Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm. I do have the new Soap and Glory Cleansing Balm to try once I've finished the Drunk Elephant one I'm currently using.

Once I have washed off the cleansing balm I am using, I usually use some form of gel cleanser. The Glossier Milky Cleansing Balm would be perfect for that but I am using it in the morning so currently I am using the Glamglow Galacticleanse Hydrating Jelly Balm Cleanser. I got a mini tube of the cleanser in a Christmas Glamglow Set and I am trying to use products from my draw. This is a jelly cleanser which has glitter in it, it feels really odd when you first apply it but when you add water to it, it turns into a milky cleanser which really cleans your skin.

I am not a massive fan of the Glamglow cleanser but to be honest I am never a massive fan of the products I use as a second cleanser but when I have been wearing makeup this is a necessary step to cleanse my actual skin rather than just being part of the removal process. I won't always second cleanse, I will only do it if I have worn makeup that day, or if I have had an extremely strenuous day. I don't want to overdo it.

Eye Cream

Normally I wouldn't bother swapping eye creams between my routines but because I am using a brightening eye cream in the morning, I have been using something more hydrating in the evenings. I have been trying to keep my eyes hydrated so I'm using the La Roche-Posay Hydraphase which has plenty of Hyaluronic Acid in it so it hydrates.

I have been using this since I had eczema around my eyes and it has drastically helped improve my eye area. It is a light gel texture that sinks in really quickly but boosts hydrating. I love this eye cream and I think I will probably buy this again when I can get to Boots to buy a new tube as this is great for both morning and evenings. With this one I would use this for both parts of my routine.

Serum

The evening is when I bring out the big guns such as acids and chemical exfoliants. This is when I will use products like the Pixi Glow Tonic or the Alpha-H Liquid Gold. Anything with an acid takes away the dead skin and brings forward your new skin cells so you have to go careful in sunlight which is why I always use them in the evening.

I treat Salicylic Acid and Niacinamide in the same way so I always use them in the evening. If I use an acid, I will use a Hyaluronic Acid on top and continue the routine. You can use Salicylic Acid and Niacinamide in the same routine but you need to leave time between using the two of them. I typically alternate which one I am using as in my mind they do quite similar things. At the moment I am using a Salicylic acid from Boots Ingredients range and my current Niacinamide is from The Inkey List.

Niacinamide has been life changing for my skin and I highly recommend giving it a go if you want to refine your pores and regulate oils. When I use it in the evening, when I wake up the following morning my skin looks so much better. Salicylic Acid helps when my skin is suffering with spots. I do not have acne but I do get regular spots so this just helps to clear them out a little bit.

Once I have used either an acid or an acid based serum, I will always use Hyaluronic Acid to add hydration back to my skin. Hyaluronic Acid is a hero product but one thing to note is that unless you live in an incredibly humid climate, definitely not the UK, you need to use a moisturiser over the top of a Hyaluronic Acid or it can have the opposite effect and dry out your skin.

Moisturiser

Much like the moisturisers I use during the day, it is hard for me to get excited about a night cream but the textures are usually slightly different. In the evening I like something a bit thicker and that is going to take a bit of time to sink in. I want to feel like I am doing the most for my skin.

The type of cream I like is embodied within the Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask. Even though it is called a mask, I just use it as a moisturiser. Before this I was using the Watermelon Mask from Glow Recipe which smelt amazing but the texture wasn't quite what I liked for the night time. Instead the Avocado Melt Mask is my preferred product.

This is quite a thick cream but as the name suggests it does melt and it sort leaves bit of a greasy film on your skin for the first hour but after that your skin just looks more plump. This does contain a mild concentration of acid in the form of PHAs. PHAs (Poly Hydorxy Acids) are the less popular cousin of AHAs and BHAs. Quite often the other two are naturally sourced whereas PHAs are a derivative of the other two. This does mean that it works on the top layer of your skin throughout the night to remove dead cells so when you wake up your skin looks more radiant and hydrated.

I am loving the Glow Recipe Mask but I wouldn't normally look for something with an acid in it purely because I have usually dealt with that in my serums but I have found using this cream a nice change. Normally I would just look for a cream that doesn't have SPF in it as obviously I do not need SPF when I am asleep and if there is one thing that is going to give you problematic skin, it is an SPF that has not been removed properly and in this case, would sit on your skin overnight. I have never been picky with my moisturisers, I just see what I have in my collection and see whatever is waiting to be used.

Face Spray

Whilst we are confined to our houses skincare has ruled my life and I have been trying to stick to doing my routine as I would be doing it if we were allowed to go out and about. One thing that has changed is that I can mist my face throughout the day. I don't take a mist to work so I wouldn't normally have that option but now that I am working from home most of the time, I can sit there and spritz to my hearts content and that is what I have been doing.

I have been spraying my Caudalie Beauty Elixir throughout the day as it is just the most refreshing product and it does give a little boost of hydration. For this very reason I have been using it to top off my skincare routine in the evenings. This is a completely unnecessary set but one that I greatly enjoy.

That concludes my evening skincare routine. I feel like there are more variables to this one. I swap out my serums and cleansers quite regularly so this does change a lot which is why I have called this my current routine.

In addition this is my daily basic routine, once a week I will do some form of mask whether that is a clay mask or a hydrating mask; I will always do this after cleansing and before I put anything else onto my skin. As I do not do this daily I didn't think I would include it, plus I do not have a standard one I use, it really does depend on my skin and what I have.

If you did miss my Morning Routine and you are curious to see how it differs, here is a link: Morning Routine, it is slightly shorter but as I said in the post I am not getting up earlier to do extra skincare. I am much more of night owl so staying up is much easier for me.

I would just like to say I am not an expert, I have never been trained in skincare. I just create my routine based on what I have learnt over the years and personal experience however if you do have any questions please ask and I will do my best to answer them.
