I love seeing anti-wishlists these days. 2 years ago, I would've wanted to run to the store or be first at the online checkout cart to get the new latest release. I would've wandered around MAC and Sephora, not finding what I originally wanted but still purchasing something "just because I was there and needed to make my trip worth it". Even last year, my spending wasn't all that great (but it was much better than 2015). Being married and having my own place definitely plays a factor in how much I'm aware about my own spending habits, but having my new job will make it a lot more tempting to spend (it doesn't make it easier that a strip mall is opening up near our place in a few months, and Ulta is going to be one of the stores).
Still though, I've been very unimpressed with the newest releases, especially the holiday ones. I follow trendmood1 on Instagram for all of the latest makeup releases, and I have not been dying to get any of them (the only exception is Rihanna's new beauty brand, Fenty Beauty, which will be released on September 8).
I totally would've wanted this palette because green is my favorite color (and you don't see any green-inspired palettes), and the packaging was GORGEOUS. I loved the shade "coffee" in this palette (the dark brown), and I love how it was inspired by Seattle. But I hate how there's a bunch of neutrals and just 3 greens. The darkest green isn't even that deep jewel-toned emerald. Did they really need a bunch of matte beiges that we already have in our 10 other palettes? It's so disappointing because I would've wanted this palette otherwise. I am better off getting the green Makeup Geek shades: Venom, Dirty Martini, Envy, and Epic and putting it into a Z-palette. Makeup Geek shadows are incredibly pigmented and buttery anyway.
LipSense Liquid Lipsticks
First of all, LipSense is a MLM (multi-level marketing) company like Avon or Rodan+Fields. So anyone can sign up to be a distributor and sell it to their friends, and even host parties to sell the products and garner more sales, and make their friends sign up to be distributors themselves. I hate MLM companies because of all the pressure to buy something from your friends or acquaintances, and you come across as a bad person if you don't support it. Most MLMs are scams. Secondly, LipSense claims to have the longest lasting liquid lipstick. It also contains alcohol. Those things make my lips want to shrivel up. I've heard about people getting stinging and burning sensations from their lip products. You also have to buy the LipSense gloss to make it last forever as it claims, and then buy the lip remover. I did hear that the lip gloss is supposed to exfoliate and heal your lips the more you wear it. I'm not believing or buying it though. I will say though that I love their shade "Fire-N-Ice" and if anyone has dupe recommendations for me, please let me know!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette
I like some of the colors here, but you will never see me with a blue eyeshadow. Then when I heard about how terrible the pigmentation and quality was, I really steered clear from it. It's too bad that the ABH Master Palette by Mario is limited edition and no longer available because the colors are much more wearable, and more pigmented. I would've recommended that over Subculture any day.
Benefit Beauty Stowaways Influencer Set
This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen from Benefit. All they basically did was put the picture of YouTubers on some of their most popular products and sold it as a set. That's right. They didn't even create a collab with their own unique ideas. It was just another marketing ploy.
Almay products
Almay was one of the first beauty brands I've tried when I first started wearing makeup in 8th grade. It looked easy to use, and I liked how they had different eyeshadow palettes for different eye colors. Their Smart Shade Lip Butters came up 2 years ago, and I was really interested in them. They had reds, pinks, berries and nudes. There was one problem though: each of those colors only came in 3 shades: light, light-medium, and medium. I thought it was a bit off putting, but I bought the light-medium and medium shades of pink and red. Then I was researching one time about the worst beauty brands for WoC (for a future blog post idea), and Almay showed up. Their campaign in 2015 was "Simply American", with Carrie Underwood as their spokesperson (Kate Hudson used to be an Almay spokesperson). You can see the Almay commercial with Miss Underwood here. Almay supposedly "celebrates the true spirit of American Beauty", which only means if you're blonde and blue-eyed like Carrie and Kate. The commercial only shows white women representing American Beauty. It's 2017, and America is a melting pot of people of all different skin tones and ethnicities. All of their darkest shades of foundation and concealer is of my skin tone or a tad lighter, so they are blatant in the fact that they do not cater to WoC. I would go as far to say that they are the Donald Trump of the beauty industry. I won't go any further on my soapbox, but I will not be buying from them anymore. Not that they care about women like me anyway. You can read a more in-depth article (along with the analysis of the Simply American commercial) about Almay's racist tendencies here.
Huda Beauty products
I used to follow Huda Kattan. She is one of the biggest social media beauty influencers, and is the epitome of "Instaglam": heavy contour, full lashes, fleeky brows, and plump lips. Her style is a bit too much for me, and something about her weirds me out. It must be her videos. I do like though how she did create a name for herself and started her own company, even after working in finance and breaking away from her parents' wishes.
Jeffree Star products
I remember hearing about Jeffree Star in high school 10-12 years ago, and how he was a hit among the scene kids. He was a musician on Myspace at the time. I think it's cool that he became a beauty maven on Youtube, and now has his own line of makeup. What I cannot tolerate was his past racist videos. I did watch his apology video about his past, and I get that it was him saying those things out of anger because he was bullied for being gay. Everyone deserves redemption and grace, but it's hard for me to support him when he talked about "poor Mexicans". My husband is half-Mexican, and he always tells me how he feels very uncomfortable being a brown man in the US. He is always worried about being pulled over just for his skin color. How can I support Jeffree Star when Cecilio expresses his concerns about a man of color in the US? It's worse when people deny that racism still exists.
These are just my honest opinions, and the only thing I would even consider purchasing is the Cargo Emerald City Palette. But their lack of greens (especially for an emerald-theme) is so disappointing.
